Current Job and Lifetime Work…. It may be bigger than you think!

Not until time keeps moving forward are we able to have successful hindsight into what was really happening within the complexities of our life.  As I have been able to do this recently, I am going to share with you, in order to help you have encouragement as to where you are currently, as your hindsight possibly hasn’t been afforded to you yet in regards to your current job.  Are you ready?  Let’s dive in!

A teacher and a flight attendant: they both command a group, they both teach, they both serve.  They both held glamorous lives full of fun; at least to the eyes of an 8 year old; this 8-year old.  Yes, to me, they both consisted of nothing short of fun and adventure.

How many of us became what we dreamed of when we were young?  I may not be a teacher in a school building (even though it is my degree) or a flight attendant, but when I look at the qualities they possess, it causes me to stop and look at my life over the last 10-20 years.  I look at the past job I had for the last 10 years; becoming a leader in a nationally known business, the career it became, developing it in order to bring in income but to also stay home with my children; those qualities and desires and gifts (as I later found out) that had been placed in my heart as a child really had panned out into my adult life.

Ecclesiastes 9:10 tells me

“Whatever your hand finds to do, do it with your might.”

Do you realize your current job, just may, pay the bills, meet your needs, fulfill you beyond belief, but that God could quite possibly be prepping you for your life’s work?  Maybe you already have hindsight from your past job; maybe you are realizing that this is exactly what is going on, you are fulfilling your life’s work, right now!  Isn’t it time to embrace it?

There is a slight catch though.  God has created us for a specific purpose, with a specific calling: for the use of building His Kingdom and for His glory! God is prepping you, preparing you, sustaining you, but only if you are willing.  He has given us a choice to make on our own and if we don’t heed His word, His commands, we will fall flat.  It tells me in Deuteronomy that “The Lord will open to you His good treasure, the heavens….and to bless all the work of your hand.  The Lord will make you the head and not the tail….if you heed the commandments of the Lord your God.”  God is all loving, all powerful, all knowing, and because of this, He has given us a choice, one to make on our own.   If we choose to not heed His commandments, well, let’s just say, I’d rather heed them.  I want Him to bless all the work of my hand.  Don’t you?

Writing a book or a blog was not the desires of my heart.  I didn’t keep a journal as a kid because it “took too long”.  I never dreamed and conspired to sit, all alone, as an aspiring author, hoping to encourage and inspire and lift up.  In hindsight, when I think of that verse “whatever your hand finds to do, do it with your might”, I think of my business of being a “jewelry lady”, of speaking and teaching in front of hundreds.  I think of the opportunities I had to minister and encourage and lift up women, and all the while, I was just “doing it with all my might.”  When God asked me to lay those 10 years of hard work to rest, to give up a $60,000 income in order to start writing a book and a blog, to move from 4,000 square feet of living space to a 1,500 square foot townhome in order to make a house payment, I couldn’t make sense of it.  But now in hindsight, he was using my “current job” at the time in order to prep me for my “life’s work” He now has before me.  Would I be willing to act?  Would I be willing to trust?  Will you be willing to open your heart to an earth shattering shake up of all you know?

In hindsight, He has shown me.  As He has connected the dots for me within my life, He allowed me to see that the simple thing of loving to “proofread and correct writing assignments” in elementary school wasn’t just a coincidence.  He allowed me to pull out my senior proficiency testing to see that I had honors in one subject: writing.  Did I have any idea I had honors in writing?!  Not at all.  He allowed me to see that the molding and growing time in my life with my last job in the last 10 years has been for “such a time as this.”

Is it possible your current job is quite possibly your preparation ground for your life’s work?!  Yes, quite possible.  Is it possible you have just come through your job to find yourself exactly smack in the middle of His calling for you?!  Yes, quite possible.  Is it possible you are trying to make sense of your current job and are now being led in a different direction?!  Yes, quite possible.

Want to know the answer?  Go to His Word and let Him speak it to you.  Go to your pastor and let Him give you guidance.  Go to your spiritual mentor and close friends and let them confirm it to you.  He will direct you.  He will guide you.  And then when your day of hindsight comes, and you have chosen to heed His commands and act, you will find yourself “like a tree, planted by the rivers of water that brings forth its fruit in its season…and whatever you do shall prosper!” (Psalm 1:3)

So get out there and start “Working with Abandon”

  1. You hit the nail on the head for me this week girl. Thanks for the encouragement. Been a rough 25 hours for me down here. Love ya and keep at it. We both know how much easier it is to live in His Will than to stay in our”comfort” zone outside of His Will.
